SERIES: The Walking Dead
CHRONOLOGY: Season 5; Episode 16 (Conquer) -- end of the episode where he reunites with Morgan
CLASS: Anti-hero
HOUSING: Sure! House him with others!

BACKGROUND: The Walking Dead universe starts out similar to our world as far as technology and necessities go. But as soon as the zombie apocalypse takes hold, the world becomes quickly stripped of resources and barren. If a section of a city isn't overrun by the dead, then it's very likely destroyed, raided, or charred. This post-apocalyptic universe provides little hope for the living to survive. And Rick's story takes place in Atlanta, Georgia.

Rick Grimes was once a sheriff and a family man. He was married to a woman named Lori and had a son named Carl. One day while in pursuit of a stolen vehicle, Rick and a few fellow police officers (including his best friend Shane Walsh) became involved in a shootout. Rick got shot and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he remained comatose while the world went to hell around him.

When Rick woke up, he found himself in a ruined hospital -- the electricity off and no staff as far as the eye could see. What was even more horrifying was the stench of death and the inhuman growls locked behind a closed door. Rick managed to leave the hospital, not understanding what was going on -- but finding his way back to his house. It was there that he discovered his wife and son were missing.

Sinking into despair, Rick almost got killed by an approaching zombie when he got attacked by a few survivors. This turned out to be Morgan and his son Duane. Morgan took Rick in, fed him, nursed him back to health, and explained to him what was going on. Rick, in turn, took them both down to the sheriff's department where they got a shower and loaded up on guns.

Rick and Morgan parted ways there -- Rick claiming he needed to find his wife and son, but they kept a CB radio in order to keep in touch. And that was when Rick went off in pursuit of his family.

Eventually, Rick did reunite with Lori and Carl -- finding that them safe with a group of other survivors and this was all thanks to Rick's best bud Shane. Little did Rick know that Shane and Lori believed Rick to be dead and had started an affair. This created the base level of tension between Shane and Rick, but it grew even more as Rick settled into his natural role as leader -- a role that Shane had assumed up until Rick's arrival.

As Rick, his family, and the rest of the group tried to survive in this new world, they faced unexpected challenges and lost some of their numbers along the way. Their single beacon of hope came when they reached the CDC building and found it was occupied by one, single worker (Edwin Jenner). Jenner provided them with sanctuary and shelter, but this quickly turned into a nightmare when the building's generator ran out of power and the group found themselves locked inside while the building was set to self-destruct.

Rick and his crew, desperate to survive, managed to find a way out, but not before Jenner whispered something into Rick's ear.

On the road again and facing winter, Rick and his group were once again without shelter. Their paths crossed with a family who managed to live untouched in a farmhouse, and this was where they stayed for a while. Here, they found out that Lori was pregnant and it was uncertain whether it was Rick's or Shane's. But this set off the tension between the two former friends even more -- inevitably leading to a fight where Rick killed Shane.

At the same time, the farmhouse got attacked and while some members of the group didn't make it out alive, the rest of the crew loaded into their vehicles and fled. It was only once they were far away from the farmhouse that Rick revealed to the group what Jenner had told him -- everyone was infected with the zombie virus. Up until this point, it was believed that anyone who got bitten by a walker would turn into one, but Rick informed them that no matter how they died -- bitten or not bitten, they would turn.

From here, the group went on to find sanctuary in a prison -- building for themselves a fairly sustainable life with crops and farm animals. But that didn't mean things were safe. There were still walkers in the prison itself, and one day the group faced an attack. Unfortunately, this was the same day Lori went into labor. With complications from the pregnancy, the only way to get the baby out was via C-section, and unfortunately the one doing it was untrained. Lori died, and Carl pulled the trigger to prevent her from turning. When Rick found this out, he entered a state of despair and lost his mind for a little while.

At the same time, there was a little community called Woodbury. It seemed like a functioning little town with normal civilians living in houses and enjoying quality life. There were gates up to keep out the walkers, and regular people did patrol at the border. This town was run by a man who simply went by the name Governor. Now, the Governor was power hungry and crazy. And eventually, he and Rick's group came head to head, becoming fast enemies. When the Governor killed one of Rick's own in front of him by decapitation, Rick snapped and attacked him. The Governor got killed by another member of Rick's group, but not without leaving devastation behind. The prison was destroyed, the group was separated, and Rick believed his newborn baby daughter to be dead. He and Carl headed off alone with Rick severely injured and in need of recovery. The pair found a house and crashed there for a short period of time.

Eventually, Rick reunited with his group, and they went on struggling. They faced new challenges -- both living and dead. They faced hunger and the need for shelter. They faced losses and gains. All leading up to one night when a young man named Aaron came to them, telling them of a place where people were safe. It was a gated community not unlike Woodbury, but this place wasn't run by a complete psychopath. It was a way back to civilization with food rations and electricity and running water. They called it Alexandria, and Rick and his crew were more like wild animals trying to be domesticated when they first arrived.

It was a struggle at first, but eventually Rick's group managed to adjust in their own ways. Things were good for a short period of time, but then Rick found himself interested in a young woman named Jessie. And upon finding out she was being domestically abused by her husband, his instinct was to kill the man. The leader of Alexandria (Deana) grew angry and told him they didn't kill people. Rick argued that people were the real threat and things didn't just get better if you turned a blind eye. And though Rick let the man go that day, he turned out to be right when that same man came back and killed Deana's husband. Only then was Rick given the go ahead to kill him, which he did without hesitation. And in that very same moment, Morgan (the man who had saved Rick so long ago) arrived in Alexandria. And the two stared at each other, shocked by how drastically different the other had become.

PERSONALITY: Rick Grimes is a leader. He was a leader in his life before the zombie apocalypse and he's still a leader afterward. He's able to keep calm under pressure, make decisions quickly, and he genuinely cares for the well-being of all of his group and does what he can to keep them all alive. Sometimes, however, he has a tendency to take this leadership role a little too far. He once told his group that this was no longer a democracy, and they were to listen to what he said which earned him the affectionate title from the fanbase of 'Rictator.' What he says usually goes and he doesn't like to be questioned.

Rick still does have a lot of love in him, most obviously for his son Carl and daughter Judith. But although they are the ones who are related by blood, Rick includes all of his group under the blanket title of family. Once you have earned his trust and respect, you have earned the way to his heart and he will go above and beyond to keep you safe.

But along those lines, one lesson Rick learned the hard way was to not trust anyone very easily. It takes a lot to earn it, and it's something he only bestows upon a few. There have been betrayals within his group -- people turning on others. And because of this, Rick has a hard time letting anyone new into his close knit circle. There was one time they passed by a survivor on the road who was begging and pleading for help, but Rick ignored him and drove right by. When they came back later, the survivor was dead and Rick stopped to collect his supplies before driving back the way he came.

Rick has become cold. His compassion for the lives of others has been compromised. Although I touched on love and explained that he does indeed love every member of his group like family, Rick also has a hard time extending any sort of kind feelings to anyone outside of his group. Along the lines of trust, it takes a long time for him to allow new members into his group. He even came up with an established series of questions as a qualifier to join his group. Those questions being 'how many dead have you killed? how many living? and why?'

There's not even a question that living in this post apocalyptic world has left Rick mentally unstable. Beyond the PTSD and the constant gnaw of anxiety, Rick is a hairpin trigger -- ready to be pulled and explode at any given moment. He kills without question and has taken it upon himself to be judge, jury and executioner when it comes to the safety of his group.

POWER: Eagle Vision - Like the sight of a hawk or eagle, Rick can see things that are a great distance away with amazing clarity. He's able to zoom in and focus on something as small as a rabbit from nearly a mile away -- viewing it with perfect clarity.

Sharpshooter - Whatever target Rick focuses on with a gun, unless there are extreme circumstances that lead to the object dodging or the bullet being deflected -- he will always hit his target. Every time.

Barrier - Rick is able to create an invisible force field around himself and other individuals. Said force field will not allow anything from the outside to penetrate it -- like bullets, fallen objects, other weaponry, or enemies. Holding this barrier up takes a great deal of concentration and energy and until he trains the ability more, Rick will only be able to hold it for a short period of time.

The barrier can also be used offensively. If Rick holds out his hands and concentrates on pushing the barrier out, an invisible force will shoot out and hit his target. It's almost akin to being hit with psychic energy.

〈 CHARACTER SAMPLES 〉
COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: [ As the video turns on, Rick stares at it with trepidation. He hasn't had a proper phone in several years now -- let alone technology. The action is so foreign and after squinting at the screen for a few seconds, he starts to talk. ]

Dunno if this is workin'. Been a while.

[ A pause. An uncertain shift. ]

Guess what 'm wantin' to say is -- can someone here bring me up to speed? The sorts of things they don't tell you when they hand you your file and send you on your way. The sorts of things only those who live in this world can tell you 'cus they've seen 'em with their own eyes. 'Cause this?

[ Rick holds up his file before the screen and then tosses it onto the table. ]

Ain't worth shit to me.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: test drive thread!

FINAL NOTES: LOL this is going to be a stupid question, and I'm sure the answer will be no. But since characters are allowed to bring pets with them, I'm wondering if Rick can have his baby daughter Judith with him? NOT COMPARING HER TO A PET OR ANYTHING. But she's not exactly an appable character, and if there ever came a point in time during the series where she became an appable character, it would be easy to just have her be sent home! I just thought I'd ask. :]
