[ Rick sounds pretty damn pleased to hear from him. He's been through some shit back home just recently, so he could use the quiet comfort of a quiet drinking buddy. A guy who isn't going to constantly ask him if he's okay or what happened. But he isn't going to say he's glad Joel's back. He knows that this place isn't paradise and Joel is likely without Ellie, which is rough. ]
[ Joel ends the call, grabs up his car keys, and sure enough, within fifteen minutes, his red Chevy is idling outside Xavier's (a place he doesn't like visiting, to be honest - to many memories of when he and Ellie lived there). He shoots Rick a quick text. ]
[ Rick's just waiting in the lobby, so it doesn't take him long after getting Joel's call to head out the door and meet up with his fellow apocalypse survivor. He gets in the car, clicks the seatbelt into place and leans back against the seat. ]
[ Not that it's been a long time in Joel's mind, even if he was gone a couple of months. And during those two months, he was entirely unaware of Rick having been Ported out temporarily. That's not something he particularly cares to focus on, at least not until he's got a few drinks into him, though, so he shifts the car into gear and pulls away from the curb. ]
Y'know, actually, I was thinkin' on the way here... I've wound up with a job workin' at a bar just outside of Heropa. Reckon I could swindle you a few drinks on the house if you wanna head there instead.
Is this taking place before/after the Carl stabbing Jesse drama?
[ His eyes veer toward the window, watching the passing scenery. ]
Been thinkin' about gettin' a new place. Somewhere away from the school. Something big enough for my group. Was thinkin' of buildin' it myself if we could. Maybe if you needed something to do, you could help out? Help make it undead-proof.
before! i plan on starting up something else for rick and joel about that c:
[ As much as Rick and himself come from very similar worlds, Joel can't even fathom a world of undead folk. Zombies. Then again, maybe it really isn't that much of a stretch from Clickers and Infected.
He gives a thoughtful nod, though, at Rick's proposal. ]
Well, I was a construction carpenter by trade back in the day, so... could definitely help out if you're in need of a qualified builder. Definitely know a thing or two 'bout makin' things... Well, there ain't any undead back where I'm from, but guess 'undead-proof' is the same principle.
It'd be good. Feel like it'd give Carl better protection. A few people came here from home. One of the guys is like a brother to me. Daryl. Think you an' him would get along. Then there's a girl, Enid. Don't know her too well myself, but she's around Carl's age. Good friends with him. If you see 'em around, they're my people so they're good.
[ Which also implies that Rick considers Joel to be one of his people, too. ]

Hey, it's, uh. It's Joel. Been away a while, and...
Anyways, just thought I'd check in. Say hi.

Good to hear from ya. Settlin' back in okay?

[ Not really.
Being a man of few words, he'll cut to the chase. ]
You, uh. Up for grabbin' a beer or somethin'?

Yeah. I'm up for it. Our usual spot?

God knows I could use that drink or several.
